The Relationship between Academic Involution and Fear of Missing Out among High School Students: The Mediating Roles of Psychological Resilience and Academic Stress
Abstract: To explore the relationship between academic involution and fear of missing out (FOMO) among senior high school students, this study adopts an educational ecology perspective. It verifies that academic involution, as an external stressor, can indirectly trigger fear of missing out through the chain reaction of psychological resource depletion and stress perception. The findings provide new empirical evidence for understanding the formation of adolescents’ fear of missing out and offer a novel perspective for interventions targeting this issue. In this study, 585 senior high school students completed questionnaire surveys using the Perceived Involution Questionnaire, Fear of Missing Out Scale, Adolescent Resilience Scale, and Academic Stress Questionnaire. The results indicated that: (1) Academic involution significantly and positively predicted the level of fear of missing out among senior high school students; (2) Academic stress played a partial mediating role between academic involution and fear of missing out; (3) The association between academic involution and fear of missing out could be explained via the chain mediating effect of psychological resilience and academic stress.
