A Study on the Correlation between L2 Grit and L2 Willingness to Communicate—A Case Study of Non-English Major Undergraduates
Abstract: Against the backdrop that Chinese university students seldom take the initiative to speak English in class, this paper explores how L2 grit shapes non-English majors’ readiness to communicate in a second language. Questionnaires were distributed to 752 first-year undergraduates majoring in engineering at Lanzhou university. Descriptive statistical analysis reveals that participants’ L2 grit and L2 willingness to communicate both register at a moderate level. Pearson correlation test demonstrates a prominent positive link between the two constructs. The study finds that learners with higher L2 grit tend to exhibit greater L2 willingness to communicate. The findings of this study can provide empirical support and practical teaching implications for developing students’ initiative in oral expression in college‑level public English classrooms.
