The Dilemma of Enlightenment and the Cycle of Interpretation: The Classical Interpretation and Evolution of Plato’s “Cave Metaphor”

摘要: 柏拉图的“洞穴比喻”是西方哲学史上最具影响力的隐喻之一，它生动地描绘了从意见到知识、从蒙昧到觉醒的哲学旅程。然而，这一比喻的内涵并非一成不变，它在现代哲学的视域下经历了深刻的嬗变与重构。本文旨在梳理“洞穴比喻”在柏拉图《理想国》中的原初内涵，并重点分析波普尔与伽达默尔对其截然不同的解读。波普尔从批判理性主义出发，将洞穴比喻视为一种基于绝对真理独占的权威预设、进而消解个体独立判断的思想源头，从而进行批判；而伽达默尔则从其哲学诠释学立场出发，重新肯定了“洞穴”所象征的“前见”与“传统”的积极意义，将认知觉醒的线性叙事转化为一种基于历史性的“视域融合”过程。通过这一对比研究，本文试图揭示“洞穴比喻”所蕴含的永恒哲学问题——关于知识、真理、传统与人的存在方式——如何在不同的哲学范式下获得新的生命力。

Abstract: Plato’s “cave metaphor” is one of the most influential metaphors in the history of western philosophy. It vividly depicts the philosophical journey from opinion to knowledge, from ignorance to awakening. However, the connotation of this metaphor is not unchanging. It has undergone profound evolution and reconstruction from the perspective of modern philosophy. This paper aims to sort out the original connotation of “cave metaphor” in Plato’s Republic, and focuses on the different interpretations of Popper and Gadamer. From the perspective of critical rationalism, Popper criticizes the cave metaphor as an authoritative presupposition based on absolute truth, and then dispels the ideological source of individual independent judgment; Gadamer, on the other hand, from his philosophical hermeneutic standpoint, reaffirmed the positive significance of “foresight” and “tradition” symbolized by “cave”, and transformed the linear narrative of cognitive awakening into a historical process of “fusion of Horizons”. Through this comparative study, this paper attempts to reveal the eternal philosophical problem contained in the “cave metaphor”—about knowledge, truth, tradition and the way of human existence—how to obtain new vitality under different philosophical paradigms.
