The Relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences and University Students’ Perceived Social Exclusion: The Mediating Roles of Rejection Sensitivity and Vulnerable Narcissism
Abstract: This study explores the relationship between childhood adversity and university students’ perceptions of social exclusion and examines the mediating roles of rejection sensitivity and vulnerable narcissism in this relationship. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 571 university students using the Childhood Adversity Scale, the Rejection Sensitivity Scale, the Vulnerable Narcissism Scale, and the Adolescent Social Exclusion Scale. The study found that childhood adversity significantly and positively predicted university students’ sense of social exclusion. Between childhood adversity and the sense of social exclusion, rejection sensitivity and vulnerable narcissism exerted both independent mediating effects and a joint chained mediating effect. The results indicate that childhood adversity is a significant risk factor for university students’ sense of social exclusion, and that rejection sensitivity and vulnerable narcissism may serve as important mediating mechanisms linking childhood adversity to this sense of social exclusion. This study enriches the theoretical understanding of the mechanisms underlying feelings of social exclusion and provides a new perspective for universities to conduct mental health education and counseling.
