Abstract: This present study explores the impact of social comparison on ostracism behavior and its underlying mechanisms through two studies. In Study 1, the direction of social comparison (upward vs. downward) was manipulated using an illusory superiority task, followed by the measurement of participants’ ostracism intention. The results revealed that, compared with downward social comparison, upward social comparison significantly increased individuals’ intention to ostracize others. Study 2 further investigated the psychological mechanism, finding that upward social comparison (relative to downward social comparison) reduced individuals’ positive emotion, thereby leading to a higher intention to ostracize. These conclusions provide positive implications for advancing theoretical progress in the fields of social comparison and ostracism, as well as helping individuals mitigate the threats posed by upward social comparison.
