The Influence of Problematic Short‑Form Video Use on Inhibitory Control
Abstract: Short-form videos have become a mainstream medium, and the impact of their problematic use on executive functions has drawn increasing attention. Inhibitory control, as a core component of executive function, is closely associated with problematic short-form video use. This paper systematically reviews the conceptual definition, measurement tools, and influencing factors of problematic short-form video use, with a particular focus on the theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence concerning its relationship with inhibitory control. Based on the I-PACE model, a vicious cycle exists between problematic short-form video use and impaired inhibitory control: on the one hand, prolonged immersion in fragmented, highly stimulating short-form video information continuously depletes inhibitory control; on the other hand, individuals with weaker inhibitory control find it more difficult to resist usage urges, thereby exacerbating behavioral dysregulation. Existing studies are predominantly cross-sectional and mostly employ general “cold” paradigms, paying insufficient attention to the inhibitory control characteristics of problematic users in short-video-related “hot” contexts. Future research should focus on developing inhibitory control tasks involving short-video cues to distinguish the different mechanisms of inhibition under “cold” versus “hot” conditions, conduct longitudinal tracking and intervention studies to clarify causal relationships, and explore the buffering effects of protective factors.
