Poetic Language and Tragic Blankness: The Constructive Art of Cuicui’s Character in Border Town

摘要: 沈从文的小说《边城》塑造了翠翠这一典型的人物形象，寄托了他的乡土理想，展现他笔下湘西世界的人性光辉与命运无奈。本文立足文本语言细读，从诗化语言和悲剧留白两个维度，探究翠翠形象的文本建构艺术。小说运用乡土化、意象化的语言赋予人物诗意美，又采用含蓄克制的留白将悲剧性隐于日常叙事之中。二者相互作用，使翠翠形象兼具真善美与悲剧命运，进而体现沈从文散文化小说的审美追求。

Abstract: Shen Congwen’s novel Border Town constructs the iconic character Cui Cui, embodying his rural ideals and shows the humanistic brilliance and sense of fate’s helplessness within the world of Western Hunan depicted in his writing. This article is based on a close reading of the text language, examining the textual constructive art of the Cui Cui’s character from two dimensions: poetic language and tragic blankness. The novel utilized a rustic and imagination language to endow the characters with poetic beauty, while employing subtle and restrained ellipsis to conceal the tragic elements in daily narratives. The interplay between these two approaches endows the character of Cui Cui with both truth, goodness, and beauty as well as tragic destiny, and further reflects the aesthetic pursuit of Shen Congwen’s prosified novels.
