The Effect of Parental Psychological Control on Adolescents’ Problematic Social Networking Use: The Mediating Role of Self-Control
Abstract: To explore the relationship between parental psychological control and adolescents’ problematic social networking use, and to test the mediating role of self-control in this association, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 372 senior high school students from Grade 10 to Grade 12 using the Parental Psychological Control Scale, Self-Control Scale, and Problematic Social Networking Use Scale. The results revealed that parental psychological control significantly positively predicted adolescents’ problematic social networking use, and self-control exerted a partial mediating effect in this relationship. From the perspectives of Conservation of Resources Theory and Self-Determination Theory, the present study demonstrated that parental psychological control could not only directly elevate the risk of adolescents’ problematic social networking use, but also exert an indirect effect via the depletion of self-control resources, which clarifies the psychological mechanism underlying the link between parental psychological control and problematic social networking use. These findings highlight the importance of focusing on family rearing patterns and improving adolescents’ self-control capacity in the prevention and intervention of adolescents’ problematic social networking use.
