A 3.5 GHz Metasurface Reflectarray Antenna for Emergency Communications
Abstract: To meet the requirements of directional gain, coverage stability, and low structural complexity for antenna front ends in emergency communication scenarios, this paper proposes a horn-fed metasurface reflectarray antenna operating at 3.5 GHz. A dual-layer symmetric meandered-cross metasurface element is designed, where a reflection phase coverage exceeding 360˚ is achieved by adjusting the geometric parameters of the unit cell while maintaining a high reflection amplitude at the target frequency. Based on the near-field phase distribution of the feed source, an 18 × 18-element reflectarray is constructed using a non-periodic phase compensation method to realize the transformation from spherical waves to quasi-plane waves. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed antenna achieves a peak gain of 19.8 dBi at 3.5 GHz. The 3-dB beamwidths in the two principal planes of φ = 0˚ and φ = 90˚ are 10.3˚ and 12.5˚, respectively, while the sidelobe levels in both principal planes are maintained at −12.6 dB. The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed structure for directional coverage in Sub-6 GHz emergency communication applications.
