Abstract: Objective: To systematically review the state of research and trends of problematic social network use among college students, so as to provide references for in‑depth relevant research and practical application. Methods: With Web of Science and CNKI as the retrieval databases, this study adopted CiteSpace visualization software to generate knowledge maps, and reviewed domestic and international literature regarding problematic social network use among college students over the past 20 years. Results: The number of international publications presented an overall year-on-year increasing trend and surged to a research peak in 2025. Domestic publication output remained relatively stable overall with minor annual fluctuations. In terms of author and institutional collaboration, international academia maintained close cooperation, whereas large-scale interdisciplinary collaboration was insufficient in China. For research hotspots, international studies applied diverse methodologies and emphasized research synthesis as well as cross-cultural adaptation of scales; domestic research mainly focused on variable relationship models and intervention strategies. Conclusion: Domestic and international research on problematic social network use among college students has become increasingly diversified. Research topics cover multiple dimensions including concept definition, predisposing factors, outcomes, underlying mechanisms and intervention measures. A relatively sound theoretical framework has been established, which can offer empirical evidence for guiding college students’ online behaviors.
