The Link between Relationship Quality and Interpersonal Neural Synchrony in Romantic Attachment: How Attachment Style Plays a Role
Abstract: The quality of relationships and interpersonal neural synchrony (INS) are two key topics in romantic relationship research, but there is still debate about how relationship quality predicts INS and its boundary conditions. This article provides a systematic review of the association between relationship quality and romantic partner INS, as well as the moderating role of attachment style, with a focus on the impact of relationship quality on INS, while also discussing the potential feedback effect of INS on relationship quality. Studies show that relationship satisfaction, conflict levels and resolution methods, and perceived partner responsiveness significantly shape the strength and patterns of INS by influencing cognitive and emotional processes during interactions. However, this prediction is significantly moderated by attachment style: secure attachment facilitates the conversion of relationship quality into efficient INS; anxious attachment, due to overactivation of threat monitoring, can lead to pathologically high synchrony under high conflict; avoidant attachment weakens INS through emotional suppression or creates functional decoupling. Different attachment pairings can result in varied neural synchrony outcomes even with the same relationship quality. Current research still has gaps in longitudinal tracking, systematic comparison of attachment pairings, and clinical translation. In the future, longitudinal design and multimodal technology should be combined to further examine the feasibility of INS as an indicator for attachment-specific assessment and intervention processes.
