The Meaning of the “Islands of the Blessed” in The Republic
Abstract: The metaphor of the “Islands of the Blessed” has not received significant attention from contemporary Plato scholars; instead, it is often dismissed as a form of irony or Socratic humor. Yet, for a thinker who placed such high value on the education of the youth—whether in the ideal city-state or in the actual Athens—the existence of these “Islands of the Blessed” was, in fact, essential. They appear at the end of Book VII of The Republic, in a context that also references the Allegory of the Cave—a metaphor introduced at the very beginning of the same book. Interpreting these metaphors at the beginning and end of the book in conjunction with one another offers a way to understand the significance of the “Islands of the Blessed.” Spatially, the “Islands” represent a setting where a community of philosophers can engage in genuine dialogue, embodying the most desirable form of happiness for the philosopher—a state where the inner self and the external world are in harmony. Temporally, the “Islands” signify an accumulation of educational efforts passed down through generations, a process through which philosophers achieve a form of indirect “rule.” Functionally, the “Islands” make it possible for philosophers to sustain the education of the broader populace. Thus, the tension between the philosopher and the city-state is balanced through education.
