Logical Interpretation of Wang Yangming’s “Mind Is Principle”
Abstract: “Mind is principle” is the foundational proposition of Yangming’s School of Mind, and also serves as the logical premise for understanding “the unity of knowledge and action” and ”the extension of innate knowledge”. Instead of simply inheriting the earlier doctrine of Lu Jiuyuan, Wang Yangming redefined the connotations of “mind” and “principle” and accomplished an in-depth reconstruction of the relationship of “mind is principle”, based on his reflections on Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism’s thesis that “Nature is Principle” and its paradigm of investigating things to exhaust principles outwardly. In his theoretical logic, “mind” specifically refers to the original mind as the substance of mind rather than empirical perceptions and thoughts; “principle” primarily denotes moral value principles instead of the physical laws of objective things. “Mind is Principle” comprises three progressive logical dimensions: ontology, value, and moral practice. At the ontological level, the substance of mind is identical to heavenly principle. At the value level, moral norms are immanent in the original mind and manifested by the subject. At the practical level, moral cultivation turns inward to remove obscurations rather than pursuing principles outwardly. This proposition also contains theoretical tensions such as the transcendental presupposition of the original mind, the rupture between the ontological original mind and the actual human mind, and the connection between moral value principles and objective physical laws. Only by sorting out its generative background, internal logical layers, and divergences from Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism, as well as distinguishing its theoretical contributions and limitations, can we objectively grasp the philosophical characteristics of Yangming’s School of Mind.
