The Influence of Embodied Robot Avatars on Individuals’ Moral Dilemma Decision-Making
Abstract: Embodied cognition theory posits that cognition is not independent of the body and environment, but is formed in the interaction among cognition, body, and environment. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) provides a technical means to explore the influence of the body ownership illusion (BOI) on cognition. Using a single-factor within-subjects design (synchronous vs. asynchronous conditions), the present study examined the influence of embodied standard humanoid robot avatars on individuals’ moral dilemma decision-making. In the synchronous condition, participants could freely control the robot avatar and develop a sense of body ownership over it, thereby examining the influence of embodying a standard humanoid robot on individuals’ moral dilemma decision-making. Results showed that the general preference for inaction (I parameter) was significantly reduced in the synchronous condition relative to the asynchronous condition, whereas sensitivity to consequences (C parameter) and sensitivity to moral norms (N parameter) did not differ significantly between conditions. These findings suggest that embodying a standard humanoid robot avatar can weaken individuals’ general preference for inaction in moral dilemmas, providing empirical implications for moral decision-making in teleoperated robot applications and human-robot interaction design. Future research with larger samples is needed to further examine the underlying mechanisms.
