The Relationship between Parental Phubbing and Problematic Media Use in Young Children: The Mediating Role of Parent-Child Interaction Quality and Young Children’s Sense of Security
Abstract: Objective: To explore the association and underlying mechanism between parental phubbing and problematic media use in young children, identify factors related to children’s problematic media use, and provide empirical evidence for promoting children’s physical and mental health. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 527 parents of children aged 3~6 using the Parental Phubbing Scale, the Problematic Media Use Measure-Short Form, the Parent-Child Interaction Quality Scale, and the Young Children’s Sense of Security Scale. Results: 1) Parental phubbing was significantly positively correlated with problematic media use in young children. 2) Both parent-child interaction quality and children’s sense of security played significant mediating roles in the association between parental phubbing and children’s problematic media use, forming two independent indirect pathways. Conclusion: More frequent parental phubbing is associated with lower parent–child interaction quality and a weaker sense of security in young children, which is in turn associated with a higher risk of problematic media use in young children. Parental phubbing is not only directly associated with problematic media use in young children, but is also indirectly associated with an increased risk through two pathways: impairing parent-child interaction quality and weakening young children’s sense of security.
