Abstract: Objective: To examine the relationships among height, vertical space, and power cognition, and clarify the role of cultural norms and the boundaries of existing evidence. Methods: This narrative review distinguishes power, status, and dominance, as well as linguistic habits, social expectations, and internalized values. Studies are evaluated according to their manipulations and measured outcomes. Results: Existing research supports associations between power-related meanings and vertical positions, and links height to leadership impressions and career outcomes. Status cues and subjective power may also affect estimates of bodily size. These measures are not interchangeable. Current evidence does not adequately rule out polarity correspondence, evolutionary accounts, or social stereotypes, nor does it establish a complete causal pathway through which cultural norms strengthen a shared spatial representation. Conclusions: The height-power metaphor provides a framework for integrating bodily experience with social meaning. Future experiments should independently manipulate response coding, bodily height, power cues, and normative information, compare the competing mechanisms’ distinct predictions, and establish the limits of their applicability.
