The Relationship between Negative Emotions and Emotional Eating in College Students: The Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation
Abstract: Objective: To explore the relationship between negative emotions and emotional eating in college students, as well as the mediating roles of two emotion regulation strategies—cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Methods: A total of 293 college students were surveyed using a self-designed general information questionnaire, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS_21), and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ). Results: Expressive suppression played a core mediating role in the relationship between negative emotions and emotional eating, while the mediating effect of cognitive reappraisal did not reach a significant level. Conclusion: Negative emotions influence emotional eating behaviors through expressive suppression. Reducing individuals’ reliance on expressive suppression and fostering adaptive emotion regulation capabilities may help block the transformation of negative emotions into maladaptive eating behaviors.
