A Study on the Correlation between Foreign Language Enjoyment and Business English Reading Proficiency

摘要: 本研究采用问卷(N = 202)与访谈相结合的复合方法，探讨中等水平商务英语学习者阅读能力与外语愉悦的相关性。量化结果中，阅读外语愉悦与词汇能力呈高度正相关(r = 0.615)，与批判评价能力呈中高度相关(r = 0.541)。访谈结果发现：生词多与句子复杂是主要障碍；愉悦情绪促进深度加工(如分析长句、思考逻辑)，枯燥情绪则导致浅层应对。需要说明的是，本研究使用横向对比自评数据，结果主要解释相关关系与可能预测方向，不能据此推断因果关系。基于上述发现，研究者提出三条提升路径：(1) 用趣味材料激发学习愉悦感并提升词汇能力；(2) 发布阶梯式任务以强化批判评价能力；(3) 开展互动型教学活动，转化消极学习情绪。

Abstract: This study applied a mixed-method approach combining a questionnaire (N = 202) and interviews to explore the correlation between reading proficiency and foreign language enjoyment among intermediate-level business English learners. The quantitative results indicated that foreign language reading enjoyment was highly positively correlated with vocabulary knowledge (r = 0.615) and moderately to highly positively correlated with critical evaluation ability (r = 0.541). The interview findings revealed that unfamiliar vocabulary and complex sentence structures were the main obstacles; enjoyment facilitated deep processing (e.g., analyzing long sentences and reflecting on logic), whereas boredom led to superficial coping strategies. However, it needs to be stated that as the study relied on horizontal analysis of self-report data, the results mainly account for correlations and possible predictive directions rather than causality. Based on these findings, three pathways for improvement were proposed: (1) using engaging materials to stimulate learning enjoyment and enhance vocabulary knowledge; (2) designing scaffolded tasks to strengthen critical evaluation ability; and (3) organizing interactive teaching activities to transform negative learning emotions.
