Parent-Child Synchrony and Child Psychological Development: Concepts, Mechanisms, Developmental Trajectories, Moderators, and Future Directions
Abstract: Objective: This review defines parent-child synchrony, synthesizes the mechanisms, developmental trajectories, and moderators linking it to child psychological development, and outlines future research directions. Methods: We review the field’s conceptual definitions and levels of measurement, integrate behavioral, physiological, and neural evidence, and discuss the limits of causal inference in current work. Results: Synchrony links to child development mainly through two routes: neurophysiological co-regulation (autonomic and hormonal coupling, brain-to-brain synchrony) and behavioral and emotional learning (joint attention, modeling of regulation, and repair after mismatch). Its developmental tasks shift with age from arousal regulation to joint attention, collaborative learning, and autonomy negotiation, and are moderated by culture, child temperament, parental stress, caregiver involvement, and adversity; the direction of its effects depends on emotional context, task demands, and repair quality rather than on synchrony strength. Conclusions: Conceptual and measurement heterogeneity, ecological-validity gaps, and weak causal identification constrain current work; multimodal, longitudinal, and naturalistic designs are needed to specify when different synchrony patterns promote or hinder development.
