The Relationship between Social Support and Social Anxiety among College Students—The Mediating Role of Refusal Sensitivity
Abstract: This study explored the association between social support and social anxiety among college students and the mediating effect of rejection sensitivity. A total of 411 college students completed the Chinese version of the Interaction Anxiousness Scale (IAS), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ). The results indicated that: (1) Social support negatively predicted social anxiety and rejection sensitivity, while rejection sensitivity positively predicted social anxiety. (2) Rejection sensitivity fully mediated the relation between social support and social anxiety. In conclusion, social support alleviates college students’ social anxiety primarily by lowering their rejection sensitivity.
