From the Individual to Society: The Functions of Ritual and Its Digital Evolution
Abstract: Ritual has transcended the boundaries of any specific cultural domain to become one of the most fundamental forms of human social behavior. Moving beyond the conventional practice of simply enumerating ritual functions, this paper constructs an integrative analytical framework that links micro-level psychological mechanisms with macro-level social effects. It first clarifies the definition of ritual and its principal characteristics. On this basis, the paper systematically examines the core functions and operative mechanisms of ritual at two levels: at the individual psychological level, ritual performs the integrated functions of anxiety buffering, emotion regulation, and the facilitation of life transitions; at the group and societal level, it enables cultural transmission, social integration, and the strengthening of identity. In addition, the paper focuses specifically on the explanatory power and evolution of this framework in the digital age, demonstrating how digital rituals fulfill and transform these functions through emerging mechanisms such as “virtual co-presence,” “the datafied body,” and “participatory reconfiguration,” and highlighting their complementary value—as a pathway of “embodied cognition”—to the “information-delivery” mode characteristic of artificial intelligence. Finally, drawing on findings from multiple disciplines, the paper offers an in-depth analysis of the challenges currently facing ritual research and outlines directions for future inquiry.
