Abstract: Ion pairs are widely present in natural systems, biological processes, and chemical environments, and play important roles in ion recognition, transport, and separation. Compared with conventional single-ion receptors, ion-pair receptors can simultaneously bind cations and anions and exploit cooperative effects to achieve efficient ion-pair recognition, thereby exhibiting considerable potential for functional applications. This review summarizes recent progress in the functional applications of ion-pair receptors, provides an overview of their structural development, and highlights representative applications in ion recognition and sensing, salt solubilization and extraction, ion transport, and stimuli-responsive systems. Finally, the current challenges in the development of ion-pair receptors and future directions for their functional applications are discussed.
