Classification of a Class of Cubic Surfaces
Abstract: We study the one-parameter family of real cubic surfaces: S λ ⊂ P 4 :{ λ x 3 + y 3 + z 3 + w 3 + t 3 =0 x+y+z+w+t=0 . Viewing the hyperplane x+y+z+w+t=0 as P 3 , we use the Jacobian rank criterion to show that the complexification of S λ is singular if and only if λ= 1 16 or λ= 1 4 . For every nonsingular parameter, the permutation symmetry in y,z,w,t allows us to construct all 27 lines explicitly. Three of them are fixed real lines, while the remaining 24 lines split into two algebraic branches. For the q≠0 branch, a reciprocal quartic equation is reduced to a quadratic equation by setting u= q 2 ; the q=0 branch is governed by a second quadratic equation. Combining the reality of their roots with the incidence relations of complex-conjugate line pairs, we obtain: λ> 1 4 , S λ ∈ F 1 ; 1 16 <λ< 1 4 , S λ ∈ F 5 and λ< 1 16 , S λ ∈ F 4 . Thus, the Schläfli-type transitions of this symmetric family are obtained by a direct algebraic argument without solving the degree-27 elimination polynomial required in general methods. The corresponding configurations of the 27 lines are also described explicitly.
