Abstract: This study, based on empirical research over the past two decades on the phonological development of Chinese-English bilingual children, reviewed the phonological development features of children whose first language is Mandarin or Cantonese and whose second language is English. Using thematic analysis, it synthesized the mechanisms of their bilingual phonological development from the following aspects: developmental trajectory (including order of acquisition, age-related progression, developmental mechanism, and variation in phonological development), unitary system or separate systems, and cross-language transfer.
