Research on Innovative Development Pathways for the Cross-Cultural Dissemination Dilemma of Digital Literature
Abstract: How digital literary works can reduce cultural discount in cross-cultural dissemination is a pressing question in the digital era. Unlike print literature, digital literature’s multimodal expression—dynamic text, images, and interactive mechanisms—cannot rely on literal translation alone. Drawing on born-digital works such as The Victory Garden and I’m dying, honey, as well as the cross-cultural reception of in-game narrative paratexts (weapon names, achievement copy, codex entries, etc.) in Genshin Impact and Black Myth: Wukong, this paper combines multi-case comparison with Reddit community feedback analysis to examine cultural misreading and response strategies. On the production side, large teams address interactive narrative breaks through localization and conceptual-metaphor reframing, while smaller teams may draw on crowdsourcing and game-community fandubbing to share cultural translation tasks. On the receiving side, readers are distinguished as individual readers, community participants, and tool users; archives such as Global Shakespeares enable navigational cross-cultural comparison, and research prototypes such as Meme2Vec offer reading assistance for slang and visual symbols. The paper outlines differentiated paths of production-side encoding reconstruction and reception-side decoding compensation for digital literature going global.
