A Comparison of Cultural Differences between the Chinese Character “Zheng” Tally Mark and Western Tally Marks
Abstract: Language symbols are tied to their social-cultural context. Using the Chinese character 正 and Western tally marks, this paper examines how counting symbols function differently across cultures. Through symbol arbitrariness, linguistic worldview, and high/low-context communication theory, it finds that 正’s five-stroke grouping eases counting, while its connotations of fairness and transparency in voting depend on specific institutions and context. The English tally stick system provided verifiable records via notches, splitting, and matching halves held by each party, serving fiscal and commercial relations. Neither represents a fixed cultural type of China or the West; both are concrete cases of symbolic practice under different social conditions. Their differences reflect each culture’s fundamental ethical and legal systems.
