Abstract: Lectures play a central role in the success of the listening section of the TOEFL test and the instruction of the knowledge and use of discourse strategy is significant in improving students’ performance in listening to lectures. Through collecting and analyzing the participant’s reflective journal and one-on-one semi-structured interviews, the study reveals how the participant practices and uses the discourse strategy in his after-class independent listening exercises and the participant’s improved learner autonomy and lecture comprehension.
