Abstract: Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (N-DAMO) is a key step in coupling the nitrogen cycle with the carbon cycle. It was found that N-DAMO process is widely distributed in many types of natural ecosystems, which indicates that N-DAMO process is a neglected methane sink, which may play a very important role in global greenhouse gas emission reduction. In this paper, the characteristics and reaction mechanism of M. oxyfera were introduced, the environmental factors influencing the distribution and the distribution characteristics of M. oxyfera in different natural ecosystems were summarized, and the contribution of N-DAMO reaction in reducing greenhouse gas emissions was preliminarily discussed.
