Abstract: In China, Cantonese (Guangdong) is one of the five dialects mainly utilized in daily life. Due to historical and political reasons, Cantonese and English have been intertwined a lot. Idioms of English and Cantonese have their unique characteristics of life and folklore, which can be used as the source and basis for the study of cultural differences. Cognitive linguists believe that idioms, as products of our conceptual system, are in fact analyzable and very much alive metaphorically. This paper compares floral idioms of English and Cantonese, in order to find cultural differences hidden behind language and acquire six correspondent relationships between idioms of the two languages. At the same time, the paper also makes a preliminary study of the translation skills of English and Cantonese idioms.
