Abstract: Fetal inflammatory response syndrome (FIRS) is a sub-clinical state of a massive releasing of inflammatory factors in the fetus under the infection or hypoxia. It is related to the adverse outcomes of neonates and is usually diagnosed by umbilical cord blood or placenta histological examination. With the recognition of the impact of FIRS on neonates and the development of non-invasive diagnostic methods, it is possible to diagnose FIRS by detecting fetal organ changes (heart, kidney, adrenal gland and thymus) on ultrasound.
