外交场合中委婉语的使用和翻译策略——以中美高层战略对话汉英口译为例

The Use and Interpreting Strategies of Euphemisms in Diplomatic Occasions—Taking the Chinese-English Interpretation in the High-Level Strategic Dialogue between China and the United States as an Example

摘要: 外交委婉语是外交场合中的一种独特的语言现象和修辞方式，也是中国外交语言的一贯风格和鲜明特点。主要围绕中美高层战略对话中方发言内容，结合实例归纳总结了外交委婉语在词汇、句法、修辞三个层面的具体表现形式；根据现场口译员的翻译文本，通过分析语料，分析了直译、意译和词义增减三种外交委婉语的口译策略；简要讨论了译员在汉英口译过程中的委婉性表达，为外交场合中委婉语的使用和翻译提供参考。

Abstract: Diplomatic euphemism is a unique linguistic and rhetorical phenomenon in diplomatic occasions, and it is also the consistent style and distinctive feature of Chinese diplomatic language. Focusing on the content of the Chinese side’s speech in the high-level strategic dialogue between China and the United States, this paper summarized the concrete demonstrations of diplomatic euphemisms at the lexical, syntactic and rhetorical levels through some examples. This paper analyzed the three kinds of interpreting strategies of diplomatic euphemisms: literal translation, free translation and semantic addition and subtraction. Besides, it briefly discussed the euphemistic expressions in the process of Chinese-English interpretation by the interpreters. The paper helps to provide references for the use and interpretation of euphemisms in diplomatic occasions.
