论大学校训“博学”和“自强不息”的英译规范

The C-E Translation Norms of University Mottoes: “Boxue” and “Ziqiangbuxi”

摘要: 大学校训的英译在学校对外交流与建设国际化高校方面发挥着重要作用。本文就大学校训“博学”和“自强不息”的汉英翻译现状，借用切斯特曼翻译规范理论，分析了校训“博学”和“自强不息”的英译与期待规范和交际规范不符的问题，这些问题不仅会影响校训英译的规范性，还会给目的语读者造成理解困惑。针对校训“博学”和“自强不息”的英译问题，本文研究提出借译和仿译的翻译方法能够符合期待规范；通过创译的翻译方法能够符合交际规范，为大学校训的英译提供了可行的研究思路。

Abstract: The C-E translation of university mottoes plays an important role in the external exchange of universities and the building of international universities. As for the current situation of the C-E translation of university mottoes “Boxue” and “Ziqiangbuxi” and by using Chesterman’s transla-tion norms theory, this paper analyzes the problems that the translation of university mottoes “Boxue” and “Ziqiangbuxi” does not conform to the expectancy norm and communication norm. The two problems will not only affect the C-E translation normalization of the university mottoes; but also cause confusion to the readers of the target language. With regard to the above two problems, this paper proposes that loan translation and imitation translation methods can help conform to the expectancy norm; Creative translation methods can help conform to the communication norm, which will be a helpful research approach for the English translation of university mottoes.
