《红楼梦》中报道动词的评价意义与英译本比较
On the Appraisal Meaning of Reporting Verbs in A Dream of Red Mansions—A Case Study of Daiyu’s “Xiaodao”
摘要: 本文选取了《红楼梦》及其两译本的前二十九章回，从评价理论视角对《红楼梦》中林黛玉交际过程中的报道动词“笑道”进行了评价意义的判定，再与两个知名译本中“笑道”的评价意义进行对比。研究发现，“笑道”主要体现态度系统里的情感意义和判断意义，两译本对于黛玉的“笑道”的处理有明显的区别。同时，该研究还考察了译本中报道动词携带的评价资源对人物塑造的作用，得出两译本对黛玉的性格特点的展现都有得失的结论。
Abstract: Drawing as source data from the first 29 chapters of A Dream of Red Mansions and their two famous English translations, this paper investigated how the reporting verb “Xiaodao” was maneuvered during the communication of Lin Daiyu in the source text and made a comparative analysis of that between two translations from the perspective of Appraisal Theory. It is found that “Xiaodao” mainly reflects the affect and judgment meaning in the attitude system, and there are obvious differences in the maneuver of Daiyu’s “Xiaodao” in the two translations. At the same time, this study also investigated the effect of the appraisal resources carried by reporting verbs in the translation on the character image, and came to the conclusion that the two translations have both merits and demerits in the description of Daiyu’s personality.
