Abstract: Complications from orthopedic and spine surgery can be life-threatening. Correct patient selection, careful planning of patient care, and preventive measures are important determinants of successful patient recovery. Following elective orthopedic surgery such as total joint replacement, intensivists should be aware of potential systemic complications common to any major surgical intervention (pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, myocardial infarction) as well as procedure-specific is-sues (cement-related cardiac events, fat embolism) and local complications (neurovascular injury).
