The Relationship between Impulsivity and Aggressive Behavior in College Students: Parallel Mediating Roles of Executive Function and Mindfulness
Abstract: Objective: Based on the general aggression model, to investigate the mediating role of executive function and mindfulness between impulsivity and proactive and reactive aggression in college students from the perspective of cognitive and emotional dual pathways. Methods: Through online data collection, 627 college students were used as subjects, and the Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire, the Barratt Impulsivity Questionnaire, the TEXI Adolescent Executive Function Questionnaire, and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire were used. Results: 1) Correlation analysis showed that college students’ impulsivity, college students’ proactive aggressive behavior, reactive aggressive behavior and executive function were significantly positively correlated, and all of them were significantly negatively correlated with college students’ mindfulness. 2) Multi-group path analysis showed that gender had no significant effect on this mediation model. 3) The mediation effect test shows that the impulsivity of college students not only directly affects the proactive and reactive aggressive behavior, but also affects the proactive and reactive aggressive behavior through the independent mediation of executive function deficit; Mindfulness only mediates between impulsivity and proactive aggressive behavior. Conclusions: Executive dysfunction and mindfulness play a parallel mediating role between impulsivity and proactive aggression in college students.
