Abstract: There are more and more bilingual families all over the world, and different first languages coexist or vie to become the primary language for millions of children worldwide. Children may adopt the language of their mother or father, the predominant language at their school, or the country where they live, if different from that of their parents. Parental anxiety often occurs when choosing a primary language for their children. This study aims to reveal what factors influence children’s choice of language in bilingual families. Six bilingual families living in China are surveyed. The conclusions of this study should benefit further research in children’s language acquisition and reduce parental apprehension in determining the language of choice in bilingual families.
