Abstract: Sarcopenia is a progressive loss of mass, strength, and function of skeletal muscle throughout the body. This condition is common in patients with chronic wasting disease and severe illness and can increase the risk of poor prognosis, especially affecting older patients as they age. Therefore, early diagnosis and early intervention of sarcopenia can greatly reduce the risk of re-hospitalization and death. Currently, some new technologies, including dual-energy X-ray absorptometry, computed tomography, ultrasound, bioimpedance analysis and other imaging methods, have been proved to be used in the diagnosis and prognosis of sarcopenia. However, due to its complicated diagnostic procedures and operational procedures, for elderly patients with wasting diseases and critically ill patients, these technologies are inconvenient. The sarcopenia index is an important tool for diagnosing sarcopenia and predicting prognosis and malnutrition in patients with chronic wasting disease and critical illness.
