Abstract: With the increasing focus on task-based language teaching in the second language education, many scholars are committed to studying the factors that affect learners’ writing performance. Planning is one of them. This paper reviews previous research on planning in second language writing. Based on nearly a decade of research, this paper concludes that there are currently three research hotspots: pre-task and online planning, individual and collaborative planning, and the use of first language in second language writing. It also proposes future research directions for planning in second language writing.
