An analysis of the Transitive Clauses in Kim Dong-in’s Potato

摘要: 《土豆》是韩国作家金东仁的代表短篇小说之一，讲述了20世纪20年代日本殖民统治下，生活在贫民窟的福女一步步沦落直至走向死亡的悲剧故事。本文运用韩礼德系统功能语言学中及物性系统的过程理论，以《土豆》为语料，进行实例分析和评价，旨在展现小说人物的性格特征以及不同时期的心态转变，揭示语篇主题和深层内涵，检验系统功能语言学理论在韩国文学作品中的可行性，以期让读者从语言学的视角进一步理解该小说并感受韩国文学的独特魅力。

Abstract: Potato is one of the representative short stories of Korean writer Kim Dong-in, which tells the tragic story of a woman living in the slums under Japanese colonial rule in the 1920s, who falls step by step until her death, and her name is Fu Nu. In this paper, the process theory of transitivity system in Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics is applied, and the Potato is used as the corpus for case analysis and evaluation. The purpose of this paper is to show the character characteristics of the characters in the novel and the changes of mentality in different periods, reveal the theme and deep connotation of the discourse, and test the feasibility of the theory of systemic functional linguistics in Korean literary works. It is hoped that readers can further understand the novel from the per-spective of linguistics and feel the unique charm of Korean literature.
