A Body Standard and Multiple Narratives—A Study on the Evolution of Prop “Model” Designs
Abstract:
The article examines the standards and diverse narratives surrounding the body in Western consumer culture, focusing on the origin and evolution of mannequins as props. Through the analysis of relevant historical materials, the study reveals that the rise of the commercial demand for body displays has been the main driving force behind the transition from body models to human mannequins. The article further explores how mannequins establish ideal images based on identity construction and gender gaze, and how fashion narratives contribute to the diversification of their appearances. The emergence of a weak gender design concept ultimately signifies the birth of a new narrative structure, where mannequins no longer require specific identities or genders but instead adapt to different appearances and traits, enabling the rapid construction of new desire forms and accelerating the circulation of goods in the free market.
