The Influence of Life Events on Psychological Distress of College Students: The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem
Abstract: Objective: To explore the relationship among life events and psychological distress of college students and the role of self-esteem, in order to enrich the research on the mechanism of psychological distress of college students, and provide theoretical basis for scientific prevention and intervention. Methods: 914 college students were investigated by using adolescent life events scale, psychological distress scale and self-esteem scale, and the mediating model was established to explore the relationship among the variables. Results: 1) Life events and psychological distress were significantly positively correlated (r = 0.73, p < 0.01), life events and self-esteem were significantly negatively correlated (r = −0.29, p < 0.01), psychological distress and self-esteem were significantly negatively correlated (−0.42, p < 0.01); 2) Self-esteem plays a partial mediating role between life events and psychological distress. Conclusion: Life events can not only directly affect the psychological distress of college students, but also indirectly affect the psychological distress through self-esteem.
