Abstract: Objective: To explore whether the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and its extended model can predict sexting among Chinese young adults. Methods: Based on the theoretical framework of the TPB and the prototype willingness model (PWM), a questionnaire survey was conducted on 348 young adults aged between 18 and 25 years old. Two structural equation models were established respectively to test the fit of models and analyze the path relationships among the variables. Results: Both the TPB model and its extended model fit reasonable. Attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control predicted intention to sexting, while attitude and descriptive norms, and prototype perception predicted willingness to sexting, and intention to sexting directly affected sexting behavior. Conclusion: The TPB model and its extended model can predict sexting among Chinese young adults.
