Abstract: Combining the virtual cyberball game paradigm and virtual hand illusion paradigm, the participants were asked to act as sufferers of ostracism, or observers, respectively, and manipulated the inclusion and exclusion scenarios, as well as the synchronization between the movements of the virtual hand that threw the ball and the participants’ real hand movements, to explore how the different roles, the inclusion and exclusion, and the synchronization, affected the participants’ sense of agency and ownership of the virtual hand. Results found that, as a sufferer of ostracism, the interaction between social context and synchronicity was significant, and social ostracism significantly reduced participants’ sense of agency and ownership, whereas, as an observer, observing ostracism did not affect participants’ sense of agency and ownership. The study reveals the effects of different social interaction contexts on self-body awareness.
