Abstract: Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) is a major complication of dyspepsia and chronic pancreatitis. Normal digestion requires sufficient stimulation of pancreatic secretion, sufficient digestive enzymes produced by pancreatic acinar cells, no significant outflow of blocked pancreatic duct system, and sufficient mixing of pancreatic juice with ingested food. Failure of these steps may lead to insufficient pancreatic exocrine secretion, leading to lipodiarrhea, weight loss and malnutrition-related complications, such as osteoporosis. This article will review the research status.
