Abstract: Fairness is an important social rule for human, which restricts and guides people’s behavior in social interactions. Many researchers have explored the motivational and cognitive processes underlying the fairness norm for thirty years. Here, we introduce the concept and experimental paradigm of fairness considerations, develop a cognitive model which includes fairness judgment, theory of mind and self-control, and review the current empirical literatures. Future research should explore the relationship between self-interest and the interest of others, focus on the research of individual difference, and begin moving towards practical use.
