The Potential of ChatGPT-4 for English Translation of Classical Literature—A Case Study on Tao Te Ching

摘要: 本文旨在探讨使用ChatGPT-4对《道德经》进行英文翻译的可能性。文章首先阐述了当前古文机器翻译所面临的语料稀缺、语言风格差异等挑战，以及ChatGPT-4作为对话式AI模型在这一领域的应用前景。研究采用了以下步骤：1) 引导ChatGPT-4考虑不同的经典文献英译理念和标准；2) 提供参考资料，帮助模型更好理解《道德经》语境；3) 使用BLEU指标和人工评估，从形态、意义和句法三个层面评估生成的译文质量。研究发现，ChatGPT-4在保持语言流畅性和语法准确性方面表现良好，但在处理隐喻、哲学概念等需要深入理解语境和文化背景的内容时存在不足。其主要缺陷源自训练语料局限、缺乏语境全面把握，以及人工智能认知能力有限。文章指出，未来发展方向应该是机器翻译与人工翻译有机结合，通过扩充训练语料、人工审校和加强人机交互等措施，实现高质量经典文献英译。最终，智能翻译技术与人类翻译专家的通力合作，将有利于更好地促进中华文化的国际传播。

Abstract: This paper aims to explore the possibility of using ChatGPT-4 for English translation of Tao Te Ching. The article first elaborates on the challenges currently faced in machine translation of ancient texts, such as scarcity of corpora, differences in language styles, and the prospects of applying ChatGPT-4, a conversational AI model, in this field. The research adopts the following steps: 1) Guiding ChatGPT-4 to consider different philosophies and standards for classic literature translation; 2) Providing reference materials to help the model better understand the context of Tao Te Ching; 3) Using the BLEU metric and human evaluation to assess the quality of the generated translations from the perspectives of morphology, semantics, and syntax. The study finds that ChatGPT-4 performs well in maintaining language fluency and grammatical accuracy but is inadequate in dealing with content that requires a deep understanding of context and cultural background, such as metaphors and philosophical concepts. Its main shortcomings stem from limitations in training corpora, lack of comprehensive context comprehension, and limited cognitive abilities of artificial intelligence. The paper points out that the future development direction should be the organic combination of machine translation and human translation. By expanding training corpora, human proofreading, and enhancing human-machine interaction, high-quality English translation of classic literature can be achieved. Ultimately, the collaborative effort between intelligent translation technology and human translation experts will contribute to better international dissemination of Chinese culture.
