译者与读者的“合作”：葛浩文英译的忠实性与可读性探析

An Analysis of Faithfulness and Readability of Howard Goldblatt’s Translation Based on the Relationship between Translator and Reader

摘要: 忠实性自古以来就是中西译论的核心论题。本文以葛浩文英译版《骆驼祥子》为个案研究对象，探析葛浩文的翻译是否有悖于忠实性，是否更符合读者的阅读习惯。研究发现，葛浩文翻译过程中不仅“忠实”于原文，而且注重还原原文风格；同时考虑读者需求。葛浩文英译是权衡“忠实性”与“可读性”双重原则下的选择。

Abstract: The issue of faithfulness has always been the core topic of translation studies in both the East and the West. This article takes Howard Goldblatt’s English translation of Rickshaw Boy as a case study to explore whether Howard Goldblatt’s translation is faithful and whether it is readable. The research indicates that in the process of translation, Howard Goldblatt not only stays “faithful” to the original text but also focuses on restoring the style of the original text while considering the needs of the readers. Howard Goldblatt’s English translation is a choice made based on balancing the dual principles of “faithfulness” and “readability”.
