Abstract: Olmsted is the most well-known urban planner and landscape architect in the United States in the 19th century, his design works cover many fields such as urban, architectural and landscape planning, and have had a profound impact on the development of cities and landscapes in the United States and even the world, so he is known as the “father of landscape design”. As an outstanding artist, Olmsted is also revered as the originator of modern landscape architecture, and his life was dedicated to promoting the establishment and development of modern landscape architecture. This article delves into Olmsted’s life and the far-reaching impact he had in the field of landscape architecture. The article not only analyzes his design philosophy and representative works, but also provides useful enlightenment for the current and future development of landscape design. The purpose of this paper is to further enrich and develop the theory and practice of urban landscape design in China by digging deep into Olmsted’s unique design techniques and design ideas and connotations contained in his works.
