Abstract: High fat diet has been confirmed to cause many obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver, colon cancer, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum GKM3, separated from sauerkraut in Taiwan, on body fat, body weight and blood biochemical in Wistar rats fed a high fat diet. The rats were randomly divided into three groups, normal diet (ND) group, high fat diet (HFD) group, and high-fat diet with probiotic GKM3 (HFD + GKM3) group. The results showed that GKM3 could significantly inhibit the weight of body and liver, reduce the accumulation of visceral fat and body fat, decrease the concentration of triglyceride and uric acid in the serum, and decrease the lipid contents in the liver and the stool. Based on the above results, GKM3 can beneficially affect the host by reducing the detrimental effects induced by a high-fat diet (p < 0.05).
