Abstract: Fitzgerald is one of the most representative writers of the “lost generation”. His novels vividly reflect the evanescence of the American dream in the 1920s. And The Great Gatsby is such a typical work. It tells a man named Gatsby pursued wealth and status crazily and he fancied redeeming his love with money, making his American dream come true. But in front of harsh reality, his American dream became a bubble in the end. Gatsby’s American dream is also the American dream of all Americans, which is the epitome of the American dream in that era. Hence, based on the utopian theory popular in the early 19th century, this thesis strives to dig deep into and analyze reasons for the disillusionment of Gatsby’s American dream centering on his love, wealth and status, revealing a theme that in the cruel society, the American dream must be a disillusion.
